my Ultron project part4

after my last post i realised i forgot to tell you bloggers what i was gonna do with my CAD hand, well i converted my solid-works file's to STL files, i then when to find a place that will 3D print my model hand. i asked my university and found out they would make it for me but its come at a price of £145 pounds i paid the price witch i found to be a bit pricey but if you want it to come out good you have to pay well the people there were nice and helped decide how to the internal structure would be , i chose a honeycomb structure because it should be light weight and strong. well moving on it took 2 weeks for it to be made by the university main 3D printer and after it was made the guy put it in this corrosive liquid that would wash away the support structure because it was made on layers, the black stuff is the supporting area.

below is a link to a short video of Paul showing me the process and some pics of it:

my Ultron project part3

today i finished my CAD of my animtronic hand and a few weeks ago the avengers age of ultron trailer came out so i watched it and i was amazed by how well i designed this hand if you look in the part were the ultron drone grabs the rock to get out the water , and  you look at the mid section of the finger i seem to have designed that quiet-well i am happy i have a good eye hopeful others will enjoy my work and how realistic it will look when being manufactured using the 3d printer.

my Ultron project part2

i have now finished my first finger assembly ,the rest of the finger was easier to make than the finger tip i guess its because i was just learning how to do surface modelling , ive been having lots of probables with a design error i came across but have fixed now called

Zero Thickness Geometry, i have looked on Google and found this good help.

Zero Thickness Geometry Explained

From time to time you may have received one of these error messages in SolidWorks:
  • Unable to create this feature because it would result in zero-thickness geometry.
  • The model could not be properly sectioned by the section line. Please check that the section line cuts through the model.
These messages will commonly occur when edges or vertices in a solid model do not properly connect with adjacent geometry. To put it simply every edge of a solid body must have exactly two adjacent faces.  Some examples of zero thickness are:

SolidWorks does not allow zero thickness geometry because it can lead to mathematical problems and downstream errors in the model.  If your unable to avoid the zero thickness design one quick way to work around this limitation is to disable the “Merge result” option of a boss/solid feature.

my Ultron project part1

well ive started making my animtronic ultron robot by starting with the hand im using solid-works to design each piece then i will fully assembly the parts to make the full hand , so far because im very new to solid works i have bumped in to many errors ''very annoying'' the first was how am i gonna do this so well i looked up some photos of ultron and well i found this nice concept art from the marvel team making the second avengers film

the above image is of ultron drones attacking the avengers and well if look at the hand well i can re draw it and make measurements to create the right shapes and features, as you can notice the finger tip has a curvature on the top part and have a very humanistic look with but ive been lucking and draw it correctly being able to make it in CAD using surface modelling.

My Project for now

Image copyright of Marvel stuidos : Avengers: Age of Ultron

I am currently designing an animatronic robot to be use in special events or for a premier showing as real life model. The animatronic will be life size and it will be modelled after the villain character Ultron from the second avengers film. In the film Ultron evolves and changes his appearance often but the most common showing of him is of him and his army of Ultron drones. I will be designing mine after an Ulton drone.

The animatronic will be powered by servos to move and have EL wire light effects in the character body to make it even more like the film. The body piece's and will be shaped and sculpted using card board then layered over resin and finally painted a heavy metal coat to create the illusion of real metal. Finaily the hand and other intricate parts will be design using solid works CAD so that it can be 3D printed for easier manufacture.
